The Borough of Phoenixville, in Chester County, Pennsylvania is 28 miles northwest of Philadelphia, at the junction of French Creek and the Schuylkill River. About 15,000 people call the Borough home with several neighboring townships supporting Borough businesses. Phoenixville, originally called Manovan, started as a center of commerce at the confluence of the two important waterways that merge and lead to Philadelphia. In 1849 Phoenixville was incorporated as a borough in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. For more than a century Phoenixille was an important manufacturing town and home to productive iron and steel mills like the Phoenix Iron Works. Other manufacturing included a boiler works, silk mill, underwear and hosiery factories and a match factory. An arts and cultural mecca even at the turn of the century, Phoenixville was also famous for the now highly collectible, Majolica pottery production. Like so many American towns, Phoenixville owes much of its growth to its waterways. Situated on the broad Schuylkill River, an historic thoroughfare to Native Americans and early settlers alike, the charming old steel town is also bisected by the fast-flowing French Creek, which Phoenixville manufacturing harnessed for power. Much of the history of Phoenixville was formalized with the official formation of the Phoenixville Historic District, the largest National Register of Historic Places site in Chester County. ![]() Early supporters of Phoenixville's rebirth include the Association for the Colonial Theatre (ACT), New Century Bank actively funding much of the renovation on Bridge Street, and long-standing anchors Columbia Inn, Steel City Coffeehouse and others. A recent wave of new bars and restaurants like the popular Black Lab Bistro, Majolica, Molly Maguires Irish Restaurant, P.J. Ryans, Tyler James, Iron Hill, 101, Marleys and others have sparked a regional interest in Phoenixville that has reverberated to its shops, services and other offerings.
